About The Artist

GARRETT M. LAWSON

Originally from Southern California, Garrett is now based in Seattle. He has been drawing since childhood, but decided to take up painting several years ago. He worked as a graphic designer for several years, but is now focusing on his dream of being a full-time artist. His primary work is abstract, but he doesn’t consider himself just an abstract painter. He has done some figurative work, and recently has been exploring landscapes.

In addition to painting and drawing, Garrett is a writer and photographer, and enjoys writing music as a hobby. He holds degrees in both Fine Art, and Fine Art Photography.

I enjoy the process of discovery in my abstract paintings. Usually, I begin with an idea of what the painting is going to be, along with the colors I want to use, but I always let the process take me wherever it wants to go. There is a special moment with each painting when something happens that I wasn’t expecting and that is often the moment that defines the work itself. It’s this sense of discovery and exploration that keeps me going back to the canvas again and again.

One of my favorite things about the type of abstracts I paint, is hearing people talk about what they see in them. It’s like seeing images in clouds; no one sees the same thing. The funny thing is, I almost never see an image while I am painting. For me, it’s all about what the paint is doing or the colors that are coming out in the process. I am so absorbed in the way the image is coming together as a whole, that I usually don’t see things in it until I’m finished.
